Endless miles of calm tranquil azure blue waters and glistening white sand are why Lanikai Beach is consistently ranked one of the “Best World” beaches.
You’ll find this piece of paradise in the community of Kailua on the windward coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The name Lanikai means “heavenly sea.” As you can imagine, the beach becomes extremely crowded on weekends. During peak times such as winter and summer the beach is almost completely packed every single day.
Lanikai is great for the whole family. The water is usually calm and temperatures are generally 75–80°F (24–26°C) making it very inviting for a swim or kayaking.
Finding Lanikai Beach can be a little tricky, since there are no posted beach signs. You will know you’re in the general vicinity, as “Lanikai” is written on a huge pillar near the entrance. The pedestrian access is located through alleyways between the homes. There is no public parking lot and the area lacks facilities like restrooms, showers or lifeguards. If you prefer a place with facilities, Kailua Beach Park is located less than a mile away and has picnic tables, bathroom and shower facilities. The town of Kailua is a great place to pick up some food, ice, and drinks before heading to the beach. Please remember to be courteous to the local residents, and clean up after yourselves when leaving the beach.
Note: As of July 1, 2014, parking violation fines have increased from $35 to $200 in an effort to keep people from illegally parking in the residential area surrounding the beach accesses. It’s best to arrive early in the day to find a place to park.
