Ho'okipa Beach Park

A Surfer's Paradise

Ho’okipa is located a mile marker #9 on the Hana Hwy. Surfers from all over the world flock to this beach for the enormous waves. Fondly referred to as “home of contemporary surfing,” Ho’okipa hosts events such as The Aloha Classic and Red Bull Surfing competitions. This is a great place for a front row seat to see some of the best surfing on the island.

Ho’okipa is a great stopover on your way to Hana or a destination beach for the day.  There are picnic tables and an observation area to watch the surfers. You will usually be able to find plenty of room to spread your blanket and work on that Maui tan but swimming is not always recommended here.

Near the pavilions, there are small areas with sheltered swimming and many times you will find small tidepools near the middle of the beach that kids love to play in. Lifeguards are on duty but it’s not advisable to venture past the shallow areas of the shoreline.

As sunset approaches you may have to share the beach with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu) on occasion.

If you plan to surf or sail here, speak with the lifeguards regarding the conditions or check the surf report. This beach is best for advanced surfers. Conditions can suddenly change and overtake novices or the inexperienced without warning. On occasion the beach park will be closed due to dangerous high surf.
